As 2020 is drawing to a close, you may be thinking about your current career path and what could be next. One thing many don’t consider is what motivates you and keeps you on this path.
As a child, maybe you wanted to be an astronaut and you knew deep in your heart that was your dream career because you loved space. As we age, this kind of clarity tends to fade and sometimes we end up on a path through a series of accidents and luck, rather than a clear “why”.
Carter Cast, an author who is an expert in career development, breaks down motivation into five fundamentals in his book ‘The Right-and Wrong-Stuff: How Brilliant Careers Are Made and Unmade’:
- Achievement: you always want to improve and accomplish meaningful goals.
- Affiliation: you’re driven to be a team player who values collaboration over competition.
- Power: energised by status, you favour recognition and control over a team or organisation.
- Autonomy: you seek control over your work and direction.
- Purpose: you desire to be a part of something larger than yourself.
In our current climate and with the year ending, there has never been a better time to think about your career and what’s important to you moving forward. The first step is to figure out what motivates you – it’s likely this has changed over the years! When you have a spare moment, sit down with a notepad and think about what drives you and why you are doing your current job. It could help to think about the five fundamentals above and what you might fit into (it can be more than one!).
Once you have this down, think about how your motivation and drive aligns with your current career trajectory. Do they match up?
This simple exercise can help create clarity, whether it be in your current role, or if you need to start looking at next steps like upskilling or even a job or career change!
