About the Role
Working as part of an established rail fleet maintenance team in East Perth, you will be directly responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing the passenger train fleet that powers Perth’s public transport network.
Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, this hands-on trade role sees you performing preventative and corrective mechanical maintenance across passenger rolling stock and associated equipment. You will work in a fast-paced, safety-critical workshop environment to ensure fleet assets remain safe, reliable, and compliant with key operational standards.
This position is ideal for a safety-focused Mechanical Fitter who enjoys a challenge, excels at mechanical fault-finding, mechanical overhauls, and working within a close-knit team of trade specialists.
Key Responsibilities
- Mechanical Maintenance & Overhauls: Carry out planned mechanical servicing, inspections, and emergency repairs across passenger rolling stock, bogies, and braking systems.
- Systems Maintenance: Inspect, test, overhaul, and maintain complex mechanical assemblies, drive systems, and heavy mechanical components.
- Pneumatics & Mechanical Systems: Troubleshoot and maintain pneumatic control systems, air supplies, valves, and mechanical linkages.
- Safety & Compliance: Drive a zero-harm safety culture on site; ensure all work adheres to strict Rail Safety Act standards, risk assessments, and site isolation/lockout procedures.
- Documentation & Reporting: IT Skills essential to allow you to accurately complete work orders, testing documentation, and asset logbooks within internal maintenance management systems.
What You’ll Need
- Qualifications: Recognized Australian Mechanical Trade Qualification (Cert III Mechanical Fitting, Heavy Commercial Vehicle, or Mobile Plant Mechanical) is essential.
- Heavy Industry / Equipment Background: Proven background in heavy mechanical fitting and equipment maintenance. We strongly encourage applications from fitters with experience across:
- Mobile plant and heavy mining equipment (e.g., haul trucks, earthmoving equipment)
- Rail rolling stock, locomotives, or freight wagons
- Cranes/Heavy lifting gear
- Marine/Shipping assets
- Technical Skills (Preferred):
- Strong working knowledge of pneumatics and compressed air systems (highly preferred over pure hydraulic focus).
- Solid diagnostic, mechanical fault-finding, and component overhaul skills.
- Safety & Integrity: Demonstrated commitment to strict WHS/HSEQ protocols and safety compliance.
- Requirements: Ability to pass a Rail Medical, pre-employment Drug & Alcohol screen, and hold a valid C-Class Driver’s License.
