We are looking for an experienced Technical Writer to join one of our major clients who are not only a global organisation, but one of the largest global providers of rolling stock and infrastructure solutions. If you have the following experience, this could be the opportunity for you.
Purpose of the job
The Technical Writer is responsible for development and update of technical maintenance documentation, procedures, and maintenance instructions, used to deliver safe, compliant, and reliable freight rolling stock, while maximising performance and profitability. The role will also manage the development and continuous improvement of industry leading maintenance and overhaul procedures by providing expert technical advice to internal and external stakeholders.

Key accountabilities:


  • Control safety standards and safe systems of work. This includes compliance with technical standards, rules, regulations, working instructions and local procedures
  • Understand the OH&S and environment risks involved in any activity you control and ensure any mitigation designed to control that risk is effectively operated/ implemented
  • Accountability for systems engineering activities associated with the SHA processes and Hazard Log, including systems assurance.
  • Supports the development of corrective and preventative maintenance procedures
  • Supports development of a Life Cycle Cost (LCC) model, Condition Based Monitoring (CBM) and predicting the future reliability of the fleet
  • Supports development of Technical Manuals/Instructions
  • Suggests process improvements to drive efficiency
  • Considers safety during engineering design change (ALARP)
  • Understands the need to address commercial reliability risks quickly
  • Seeks ways to improve efficiency and identify areas where savings can be realised
  • Considers whole life costs during all activities
  • Promote Vision Zero and the Rail Division Six Pillars of Safety across all activities
  • Build effective business relationships with relevant internal and external stakeholders
  • Reporting all injuries, HSE issues, incidents, and hazards immediately
  • Complying with the requirements of the National Rail Safety Act), with respect to the obligations of Rail Safety Workers where applicable
  • Self-declare any issues affecting ability to work safely e.g. drugs, alcohol, competence, fatigue, stress etc.
  • Playing a positive role in supporting the organisational safety, quality and zero harm culture, which involves promoting and demonstrating safe behaviour and practices, identifying continuous improvement opportunities, reporting accidents and near misses and identifying hazards and unsafe acts
  • Ensuring individual’s acts or omissions do not affect the health, safety, and welfare of others
  • Conforming to Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE), including Rail Safety Management Systems
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Experience (2yrs preferred) in developing maintenance documentation.
  • Experience (2yrs preferred) in rolling stock or plant maintenance.
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of aspects of equipment maintenance.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and computer-based skills.
  • Previous experience developing maintenance instructions.
  • Knowledge of relevant Australian and International rolling stock standards
  • Knowledge of engineering change processes.
  • Strong level of customer service and communication skills
  • Proven ability to organize and priorities tasks, be flexible and resourceful, proactive, and professional in manner with a high degree of initiative
Position Requirements:
  • Rail Category medical
  • Eligible to obtain a RISI card
  • Valid state specific issued Construction Industry Induction Card
